How cloud architecture can improve your business

The past 18 months have made everyone more comfortable with technology.

We are now much more adept at using laptops, smartphones and tablets to access services directly from the web. From shopping on the internet to sharing news and downloading movies, digital exploitation has become second nature to many of us.

The same changes are visible in the business world, with many organizations moving to the cloud. According to the Flexera 2021 State of the Cloud report, 99% of companies worldwide are now using the cloud at least to some extent.

But what does this mean in practice and why should consultancy firms embrace the trend?

What is the cloud?

The cloud is a way to store and access data and services on the Internet instead of using physical hardware.

In the past, we may have used USB drives and hard drives to store personal documents, photos, and music. Many people have switched to using iCloud or Microsoft OneDrive, which allows you to access your information from any location and web-enabled device.

Likewise, companies may have previously kept data and software on servers hosted in their office, but are now using external web services. Amazon saw the potential of cloud services over ten years ago, launching Amazon Web Services in 2006. It is considered a market leader along with other major tech brands Microsoft and Google.

What is cloud architecture?

Cloud architecture refers to how you access the cloud and covers everything from the front-end user experience to software, databases, application program interfaces (APIs) and back-end infrastructure.

The three main types are: software as a service (SAAS); infrastructure as a service (IAAS); and platform as a service (PAAS). Businesses can use one or a combination of these services.

SAAS delivers software and applications on demand over the Internet without the need to physically install them and store them on your computer. It is the most widely recognized and well-developed cloud architecture model and also the one that financial advisors use the most frequently – Intelliflo Office is a SAAS.

Less known but increasingly popular in the consulting industry, PAAS can be used to build and host applications through cloud infrastructure managed by a third party. Website hosting services are a prime example of PAAS.

Likewise, IAAS are increasingly used in financial services. It provides virtual hardware, such as server space, processing bandwidth, and network connections, enabling businesses to reduce their dependence on on-premises equipment.

What are the benefits of using cloud architecture?

For consulting companies, there are many advantages to using cloud-based solutions over physical hardware. Here’s a look at my top 10:

1. Reduced cost

One of the most important business benefits of cloud-based services is the significant savings they offer over the cost of purchasing and maintaining your own physical equipment. And the services are usually paid, so you just have to budget for what you use.
