MDC’s Business Innovation & Technology Center Launches New Student-Run Digital Agency (SODA) on October 13

Miami, October 5, 2022Miami Dade College‘s (MDC) Business innovation and technology (BIT) Center will launch the first Student-run digital agency (SODA) in the heart of downtown Miami. Thanks to SODA, students interested in marketing careers can earn industry-recognized certificationssuch as Google and Hootsuite for free, and have the opportunity to work with local businesses and organizations to help them overcome the challenges of marketing and business growth.

SODA will officially kick off on Thursday, October 13, with a series of free events open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the BIT Center located on the Wolfson Campus.

“Since its opening in 2020, the BIT Center has proudly fulfilled its mission to facilitate access and understanding of emerging technologies, including Blockchain, Cryptocurrencies, DeFi, NFTs and Metaverse, among others,” said Chechu Lasheras, Director of the BIT Center. “With SODA, we’re expanding that mission, allowing students to put their knowledge to the test by creating marketing strategies for real clients while earning certifications and learning new skills at no cost.”

Created to enhance the college credit programs offered by MDC’s School of Global Affairs, Trade and Transportation, SODA was first conceived by Lasheras with the idea of building student confidence by enabling them to obtain globally recognized marketing certifications and the opportunity to be trained in business and digital marketing. Additionally, students will assist local business owners and organizations with various services, including digital footprint audits and targeted paid media campaigns.

Mirroring the organization chart of a traditional advertising agency, SODA is currently composed of a team of five students: Supervision & Management Major Minerva Roca, as Chairman of SODA; Major in Graphic Design Technology Melanie Rodriguez, SODA vice president at West Campus and creative director; Major in Business Raphael Toledo, SODA Vice President at Wolfson Campus and Marketing Specialist; Major graphic design technology, David Chavez and Multimedia Graphic Designer and Major in Business Administration, Juan Minoprio, who works as a content producer.

The agency works under the direction of faculty advisor Max Ramirezhead of the BIT Center and professor of digital marketing at MDC, who previously worked as an advertising executive, leading teams for and Time Warner Digital. The BIT Center will actively recruit students for SODA across all eight MDC campuses.

SODA operates like a regular agency with departments representing research, strategy, creation and production. Student members represent a range of academic majors, from finance to graphic arts, and with no marketing background. They volunteer up to five hours a week. Agency members are supported by an academic advisor and industry-recognized partner advertising agencies, such as Diaz & Cooper Advertising. SODA has already developed its first paid digital media campaign for, a Miami-based investment advisor for Hispanics. The results of this campaign will be presented at the inauguration of SODA.

The agency will officially open its doors on Tuesday, November 1, 2022. Students or local businesses wishing to find out more can contact Max Ramirez at [email protected].
