Manchester United and Aston Villa meet at Old Trafford in an FA Cup 3rd round clash on Monday, with the two trying to determine if their new manager is right for them after all. Before we start, this is the start for Ralf Rangnick and Steven Gerrard respectively, I know.

But the signs are not too encouraging. Of course, Rangnick only hangs around until the end of the season, but this guy climbs the stairs in the summer to try and steer the rudderless ship. Is he right about the Premier League? Can he handle Manchester United? Gerrard started well at Villa Park but lost three of his last four games, as tough as they could have been.

So this game could be a welcome distraction from the Premier League struggles for both of them, then. I suspect that Villa and, more specifically, Gerrard will want to win this more than their opponents, but United have serious motivation after their weak performances against Newcastle and Wolves recently.

Rangnick is probably only really worried about a top-four ranking, but United could still field a strong squad as they seek to find the cohesion they so badly need. The villa reaches mid-table darkness, so a cup run could shed some light in a potentially dreary season. Will they get it? Let’s find out.

Overall I think it could be a pretty entertaining game. Not because United play excellent, stylish and attacking football, but because they have to show Something here. Those two previously mentioned weak performances were punctuated by a 3-1 win over modest Burnley and lackluster 1-0 wins over Norwich and Crystal Palace.

This Wolves game looked like a new nadir, and therefore, they could go out and play a few games before going back to type. The Red Devils almost always score and their miss against Wolves was the first of nine before that.

It’s a similar case for Villa who have scored in six of their last seven games, against Chelsea, Leicester and Manchester City along the way. With the freedom to be released from the league, I think we’ll see a winner in a decent game with the two scoring on the way to Over 2.5 goals.

Danny Ings has had a somewhat frustrating season so far, scoring just four goals in 14 appearances since leaving Southampton. The Ollie Watkins link has yet to be clicked, but he last scored against Brentford.

Was it a coincidence that Watkins was absent for this game? As Gerrard kept his cards close to his chest due to the former Bees and Exeter striker’s absence, the allusion was Covid and if that’s true there’s a good chance he won’t start here, given the isolation and lack of training.

This means that Ings can do his things and repeat the weekend trick. Faced with United’s generous defense, I think the cunning Ings can score anytime for the exterior side.

I don’t think it will be enough for the win, however. I anticipate a few goals and Villa never draws. Their last standoff was 15 games ago and I suspect they will be passed. It’s the boom or bust for them and with the latter in vogue at Villa Park right now. They have lost four of their last six games.

Please don’t assume I think United are good. I just think they are better than Villa and playing at home with something to prove once again with the quality they have at their disposal I think it is worth supporting Manchester United will win, certainly in a Bet Builder.

Speaking of star quality, enter Cristiano Ronaldo. He is United’s top scorer of 14 with nine more than anyone in their entire bloated squad. I think he will play here and if he doesn’t start he will at least be on the bench.

He loves to score big goals and you can already see him running shirtless and screaming towards Stretford End to pump up adulation after sending United to the next round. It’s written in the stars. Cristiano Ronaldo will score the last rounds us off.

Over 2.5 goals
Danny Ings scores anytime
Manchester United will win
Cristiano Ronaldo will score the last
