Austria is home to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and has been a member of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) since its establishment as a permanent UN body in 1959, giving it the unique role of host. and Member State.

Austria has long been committed to supporting COPUOS and its work. In June 2019, the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space’s Guidelines for the Long-Term Sustainability of Space Activities (LTS Guidelines) were adopted, providing guidance on the policy and regulatory framework for space activities; safety of space operations; international cooperation, capacity building and awareness raising; and scientific and technical research and development. LTS also plays an important role in the recently released Austrian Space Strategy 2030+. Mag.a Andrea Kleinsasser is Deputy Head of the Department for Space Affairs at the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology.
