The Car Man used car lot has been a staple on West Broad Street in Henrico County for nearly five decades.
But Tuesday was his last day.
“The auto industry was good for us and gave me a lot of opportunities. It was a great business and we enjoyed it, ”said owner Victor Moes. “But the auto industry is too difficult and has taken too long. It is time to move on.”
Its first lot The Car Man opened at West Broad Street and Pemberton Road in 1973. It moved a decade later to its current location at 7221 W. Broad St., about a mile from Interstate 64.
He estimates that he has sold around 15,000 vehicles in the past 47 years.
Moes, who turns 76 next week, turned over his dealer license to the state licensing board on Tuesday the same day his insurance on the company ran out. He thought it was a good time to close his business.
The used car industry, he said, is increasingly difficult to tap, even before the coronavirus pandemic hits. For example, years ago, customers would come to his house with cash in hand or financing from a bank or credit union.
“When people come in today, the first question they want to know is whether we fund internally. We don’t, ”he said, noting that The Car Man was dealing with a bank to help clients organize the financing.
